The specialized facility has housed Ebola patients, some of the country’s earliest known COVID-19 cases, and now 15 former passengers of a ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak that’s killed three people. But Rosmarin, who was one of more than 140 passengers and crew on that vessel, said it’s not all bad. Jake Rosmarin shows off his isolated room inside of the National Quarantine Unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He plans to spend 42 days here after disembarking a ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak.Jake Rosmarin HPGam.cmd.push(function(){ return HPGam.render("inline-2", "entry_paragraph_3", false, false); }); “I’m in good spirits. I feel good, I have no symptoms. I have my daily temperature checked,” he said of his current care and improved morale since disembarking the ship, which in its final days became marooned off the coast of Africa amid fear of the virus spreading. “I was in a really dark place those seven days,” he said of that uncertain period, which saw him post an emotional video to Instagram that asked for “kindness and understanding.” It can take up to six weeks for someone infected with the virus, which has a high mortality rate, to show symptoms. This prompted the 42-day quarantine of Americans at the nation’s only federally funded quarantine unit, which health officials have said is voluntary. If the former passengers would rather self-monitor for symptoms at home, they’ve been told they can opt out at any time. He said he talks with the nurses when they appear outside his door, and he can call the rooms of the others quarantined, something he hasn’t done yet. Asked about those other guests, he declined to say whether he knows them and whether they also intend to stay the full six weeks. He also wouldn’t say whether he had any physical contact with those known to have become infected with the virus. He declined to say more out of respect for everyone’s privacy. For now, Rosmarin said he’s focused on staying positive and that the one thing he looks forward to more than anything is hugging his family and loved ones back in Boston and New York upon his release. “Because that first hug that I get to give is going to be the best thing in the world,” he said. He also has plans to travel again once he’s out, just not on a ship. The MV Hondius cruise ship is anchored at a port in Praia, Cape Verde, on Wednesday, May 6.via Associated Press“I do have travel plans that were already booked,” he said. At the time of the outbreak, he said he was working as a kind of unpaid brand ambassador for the ship. This work follows his decision to quit his job in TV advertising in 2022 to travel for a year. “I think that travel’s going to be hard,” he said, “and I’m going to have to push myself relatively quickly to face this trauma that I now have to face with travel because travel is something that I love so much, and this experience has really definitely traumatized me in that aspect.” Hantavirus Is Real.
